Great Bird Feeder

We had a feeder like this for many years until my husband dropped it and it shattered from age. I immediately sent for another. It holds alot of seed, is protected from rain by the lid. The birds love it and the squirrels cannot get to it. It really works. It's a great product!

Great, Holds A Lot of Seed

Although I am a bit concerned about reviewer reports that this feeder tends to shatter if it hits the ground, I bought it anyway, mostly attracted by the fact that it holds a large volume of seed. I am also very pleased with the design including the generous cover that does a fairly good job of keeping rain off the seed. Most, but not all, of the birds who were using my more traditional feeder have adapted to this one (but not the doves or the red-bellied woodpeckers). Its open design makes it very easy to clean thoroughly; much easier to clean than a classic tube feeder. Duncraft sells a locking chain that could be used to secure this feeder to tree branches or feeding station poles ([..]).
Best Squirrel-Proof Feeder Available

I bought one of these feeders for myself about 5 years ago, and it is the best squirrel-proof feeder that I have found. Exceptionally talented squirrels can jump horizontally into the narrow space between the roof and tray, but only if it is quite close to a tree or wall. Most squirrels crash a few times and then make due cleaning up what the birds dump on the ground. They can't access it by coming down the chain from above. The feeder also holds so much seed (about 6-7 lbs.) that you don't need to refill it often. I love this feeder and recently purchased a second one as a gift. You'll make up the cost in saved seed within a few months.

This product performs as described. It is sturdy and well-constructed out of recycled plexiglass, but it will break with impact. The Cafe is easy to assemble and hangs on a chain. I have mine hanging on an oak tree limb. This feeder can be loaded with any commercial seed so you may attract any type of birds that you choose. I live in a rural area and my country squirrels have been unable to defeat the Cafe. I have no expertience with town squirrels; they may be smarter.
The birds love it!

I placed the bird feeder off my deck, which is high enough so I can see it from my sunroom. There have been lots of birds use it, and in all our rain the food has not gotten wet.
I'm anticipating that the construction will be such to last for many years.
Great Feeder But Needs Stronger Construction

I'm going to reiterate what a number of other reviewers have stated. Conceptually this is a great feeder that gives my backyard squirrels the fits. The downside is the feeder's fragility. When empty a 4 foot fall onto grass cracked both the baffle and the tub. If it had been full it no doubt would have shattered. This perplexed me as I have 2 mandarin baffles that I purchased years ago for other feeders. These have survived worse falls with no damage. When comparing them I can see the older ones are noticeably thicker. The V wire that attaches the tub to the baffle is also much too thin. If you lift a full tub holding one side of the V it bends out of shape. If you want to fill this feeder with sunflower seed consider getting the the portal opening version that has perches instead of a tray as the tray soon fills with husks. The large seed capacity cries out for more robust construction. I love this feeder but I wish it was built to last.
One VERY BAD Flaw

I really do love this feeder. It is the best to keep out squirrels and it's very entertaining to see them try.
My one and only problem (and this occurred mostly because I hadn't refilled it when I should have)was that a bird got stuck reaching its head into the feeder to get the few morsels of seed remaining. I came home from work and he was really really stuck. I tried on vain to get him out, but we ended up finally having to use a heavy duty cuttter to cut the feeder in half.
Lucky bird, but I have not replaced it...
GOOD FEEDER, NOT SQUIRREL PROOF

THIS IS MY SECOND SKY CAFE. THE FIRST ONE LASTED ABOUT FOUR YEARS BEFORE IT GOT KNOCKED DOWN ONE TOO MANY TIMES AND BUSTED. ON THE OLD ONE IT WAS HARD TO GET THE TOP DOWN CORRECTLY. YOU HAD TO HOLD YOUR MOUTH JUST RIGHT TO GET IT ON. I'M THRILLED THAT THIS NEW ONE FITS TOGETHER MUCH MORE EASILY. IT HOLDS A LOT OF FOOD, WHICH MEANS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO FILL IT UP EVERY TWO OR THREE DAYS. THE ONLY REASON I DIDN'T GIVE IT 5 STARS IS THAT THE SQUIRRELS DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM LAYING ON THE SMALL EDGE OF THE TRAY AND EATING TO THEIR HEARTS CONTENT. MY PREVIOUS MODEL HUNG FROM A SQUIRREL/RACCOON PROOF POLE THAT MY FATHER HAD MADE. I NO LONGER HAVE THAT POLE AND THE SQUIRRELS SHINNY RIGHT UP THE NEW POLE AND ONTO THE FEEDER. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION, PERHAPS MISTAKENLY, THAT THE FEEDER WAS PRETTY SQUIRREL PROOF. I THINK IT'S STILL WORTH THE MONEY, JUST TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT FILLING IT SO OFTEN. ALSO, IT'S EASY TO CLEAN. JUST DON'T EXPECT THE SQUIRRELS NOT TO EAT THEIR SHARE.
Squirrel-proof; spare parts available

1) This is really squirrel-proof when properly installed from a suspended wire. One of the only ones that is! (NOT when put on a post). The squirrels slide off every time!

2) The plastic is "recycled" Plexiglas. I'm all for recycling, but here this product will be exposed to years of ultraviolet light; recycled plastic will not be as degradation-resistant as virgin plastic unless they add back the UV stabilizers to the polymer mix (which I doubt). My last one, several years old, cracked spontaneously one day and shattered when it fell on the patio, apparently due to degradation of the plastic.

3) You can buy spare parts at very fair prices from the manufacturer, so consider buying just the replacement parts you need. (I forgot, and bought a whole new one).

4) I like the model with "dividers" best, rather than this bottom-tray unit: Arundale 152 Mandarin Wild Bird Feeder with Seed Dividers. The model with a tray at the bottom may be less squirrel-proof, depending on your installation.

Price was good. Missing chain and wire that goes inside feeder. I just used the old one. Shipping box was beat up but product was OK.
