A love bird is a great choice but it is a one person pet. If the bird gets attached to another person I will attack you grandmother. But, if it takes to your grandmother I would be the best gift you could get her. They can be very playful and cuddly.

what kind of bird houses should i get?

Question by sportzy922: what kind of bird houses should i get?
I live in Virginia on a farm with animals and an orchard surrounded by woodland. My house is pretty private is it is at the edge of a long dirt road. I am considering buying and putting up several bird houses around my yard. Here are my questions:
1) What kinds of birds in Virginia will nest in man-made boxes, so what kind of bird houses should I get?
2)Where sould i put the houses (please tell me for each different species)?
3) How high should I put them and how far apart?
4) what is the most number of houses i can have in my yard (8 acers)?
5) I have several feeders near each other that there are always birds on, but I’ve read not to put houses near the feeders. How come?
6) If I attach houses to the side of my barn, will they nest in them? Also, will robins and swallows nest on perches inside my barn?

Any advice you have would be greatly appriciated. Thanks!!!

…the “little” birds will flock in most anywhere… the thing to remember… the size of the entrance “hole” will most always determine the size of the bird looking for a home… Martins like the Hotel lifestyle… multi levels and lots of rooms all in one BIG building on a post about 10 ft. off the ground (and they eat bugs, bugs, bugs… “Google” up bird houses and check it out.

Robins are not seed eaters. They eat insects and worms, and some fruit. The robins in my yard come to the feeding station when I put out grapes.

Sunflower seed (the black oil type, not the striped) is a favorite food of many birds, including blue jays, chickadees, finches, nuthatches and tufted titmouse.

There is no such thing as an owl feeder. Owls are predators. They catch and eat other animals.

Feeders should be at about 4-5 feet from the ground, if you are hanging them in trees. There are other feeding stations that you can make for ground-feeding birds.

Cats can absolutely hurt birds while they are eating bird food. That is why you should never allow your cats to roam outside. You should chase any neighbor cats you see in your yard. You should also provide some shelter for the birds, like bushes, that they can fly into quickly to escape cats and other predators.

I know that you did not ask about it, but another important thing to remember is to provide a source of clean, fresh water for your backyard birds. Another thing – if you have birdhouses where birds are nesting, do not place your feeders too close to the birdhouses. The food can attract predators that would harm or kill the baby birds.

Ruby throated humming bird question?

Question by pj h: Ruby throated humming bird question?
Has anyone else ever seen a ruby throated humming bird that was dark yellow instead of the usual dark feathered color? We have one feeding at our feeder but we have so far failed to photograph it.

Best answer:

Answer by Marlane
I have seen irridescent green colored Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, but not a yellow one. I found this pic on Flicker. It shows a light brown one. Look at the pictures in the album on this link, you will see a light brown one with a red throat.
Maybe this is similar to the one you have at your feeders.

I’m not sure they are Ruby Throated.

squirrel proof feeders:its they really work?is it squirrel proof feeders can avoid bird seed?

Question by bella: squirrel proof feeders:its they really work?is it squirrel proof feeders can avoid bird seed?
is it squirrel proof feeders can avoid bird seed to steal by naughty squirrel proof feeders?

Best answer:

Answer by ms bell
Some of the squirrel proof feeders work better than others. I’ve found that the ones that are weight-activated and shut off the flow of seed when a squirrel sits on it is the best to use. Wildbirds are able to get at the seed because they are too light to activate the seed being shut off. These feeders are very sturdy and can be mounted on a tree or pole.
Here are pictures of the kind of feeder you’ll want to buy:

In addition, there are some that come with a baffle or metal wire around the feeder so the squirrels can’t get to them:

The Audubon Society’s Field Guide to North American Birds. They have an Eastern edition and a Western edition depending on where you live. I love feeding the birds as well. Keep a list of the different birds you see and you will be amazed at how many you know.
