Q&A: How can I keep squirrels off my feeder.?

Question by Rubyee2: How can I keep squirrels off my feeder.?
I have a squirrel proof feeder but they still can get in it. I do not want to buy bird seed for the squirrels It is too expensive. What should I do. Isn’t there some way to keep them off

Best answer:

Answer by sensible_man
Depends on where the feeder is installed. If it is on a pole, use a piece of PVC pipe about 3′ long over the bottom of the pole. They cannot climb it. If in a tree, with no other trees near it, wrap the trunk with a shiny piece of plastic or a piece of galvanized metal sheeting.

How does the budgie-vertical tube water feeder works?

Question by conserve wildlife: How does the budgie-vertical tube water feeder works?
how can the budgie drink from the water feeder? How does the water stopes coming out after the bird drinks it?

Best answer:

Answer by ms bell
Water feeders work on a vacuum lock. When the budgie puts his beak to drink, the water flows out. When the budgies releases its beak from the bottle, the water stops. Many people like water feeders because they are more hygenic than a water bowl. The bird can’t poop in the water feeder.

Trying to help my friend in Florida figure out what birds’ are coming to her feeder?

Question by BroCade Marc came 11/1/10: Trying to help my friend in Florida figure out what birds’ are coming to her feeder?
I have studied birds for years & cannot figure out this bird …

The way she describes it, it sounds like a small bird. She said “some” have black heads – I would assume those are the males? And she said they’re grey & blue in color. She didn’t specify where they’re blue and grey i.e. the breast, rump, ect. That’s the only info I have.

Any ideas?

How long until I have birds at my new feeder? Also what type of seed is best for feeding them?

Question by sheenalbrown: How long until I have birds at my new feeder? Also what type of seed is best for feeding them?
I put out a new bird feeder on Saturday it is now Monday and I have yet to see a bird near my feeder. I have it hanging in a tree that sits in my front yard. Normally there are several birds in this area at different times throughout the day and often there will be two or three nests in this young tree yearly. I bought bird seed that has peanuts and safflower. It also contains a blend of striped sunflower, raisins, & dried cherries. The mixture is mostly black. I’m completely new at this so any and all suggests are appreciated!! Thanks!!!!

the kind of seed you put out determines what kind of birds you will get…however, birds do take a few days to find a feeder, but then you should have more than you know what to do with!!! the fruit should draw jays, sunflowers are preferred by mourning doves,(but it needs to be on the ground, in a spot they feel safe to eat in….as they feed in flocks, with usually one ‘lookout’ for the group… etc…take note of what kind of birds you have, then look up what they eat, buy accordingly…good luck sweetie.

Q&A: Why are the birds no longer coming to the feeder?

by dagnyg

Question by Oreo Dog’s Mom: Why are the birds no longer coming to the feeder?
I moved about 2 years ago and started feeding the birds shortly after that. I had a nice mixture of birds… chickadees, nuthatches, sparrows, juncos, blue jays, cardinals, gold finches (lots of them). So this summer I increased the number of bird feeders and types of food that I offer… thistle, black oil and mixed (each in their separate feeder). I also have suet & a ‘suet ball’ from the meat department out there.

I’ve always had a bunch of birds and now… I’m lucky if I see a couple of nuthatches and woodpeckers a day! What in the heck happened? Any ideas and/or suggestions for what I should do?
YES birds do fly South… BUT the birds that I specifically mentioned do not leave Pennsylvania for the winter! I fed these birds last winter and this summer!
